Do
you have everything you need for your performance?
Did you sign the performance sheet and let the
hosts know of any special requests?
Do you need any accompaniment or are you willing
to accompany anyone else?
1.
PRACTICE
One of the most preached thing
in your musical life is PRACTICE. Your instrument
is your tool to get your message across. Whether
it’s a keyboard, a guitar, a wind instrument,
drums, or even your voice; you need to cultivate
your tool so your ‘stories’ can be heard
the way you want them to be heard.
Perfect
Practice Makes Perfect. If you’re
sitting in your room, try to focus on your practice.
Limit interruptions like Facebook, or YouTube, or
the awesome Fender Telecaster you’re bidding
on eBay. Scales and chords, vocal warm-ups and exercises,
rudiments and tuning are all exceptionally boring
activities. Believe it or not, all songs are created
from these basic drills and exercises. The more
you know and the more of these that are mastered,
the more you can focus on the performance itself.
2. PREPERATION
You’ve practiced
hard and you want to do your best. You have your
song down perfectly and you can’t wait to
get it out there. Part of preparation is thinking
about your performance. Do you want crowd interaction?
Do you have props that you need to practice with?
Is you gear tuned and setup properly?
Visualization is Key. Your song and your
ability to play or sing it well is only part of
the puzzle. The easiest way to prepare for the performance
of your life is to close your eyes and imagine yourself
doing it. From start to finish, think of what could
happen and what you would do to fix it, or how you’ll
react when it’s perfect. What will you wear?
Which amp settings will you use? Which drum sticks
will you use? Do you need new strings? How are you
getting to your show? Try and eliminate any drama
before it even rears it’s ugly head!
3. PERFORMANCE
You’re playing
your heart out. Your song is being heard by any
number of people. Whether it’s 12 or 1200
people in your audience, they all deserve your best.
Is your crowd attentive? Are they jamming out with
you? Congratulations, you’re in the moment!
Time to ’Rock’
With the help of your practice and your preparation,
there’s nothing stopping you from getting
a roaring cheer from the crowd. You’re playing
your heart out and the planets are aligning themselves
because of the music that you’re playing.
All is good with the world, and you can’t
wait to let everyone know that you did it! You’ve
tamed the dragon and there’s nowhere to go
but up!
BEFORE, DURING and AFTER PERFORMANCE
You’ve picked the perfect song. You’ve
written you heart on paper and you want the world
to hear it. You’ve practiced you whole life
for this moment. You’re just waiting for your
turn at the microphone. Did you visualize your trip
here? Did you visualize your performance? What do
you like about the performances you’ve seen
during your life? You’re in the performance:
What’s going well? What can you improve upon
right now? You’re performance is done: What
did you like about it? What can make it better next
time?
